Abstract : The power and status of pre-1949 Shanghai gangster Du Yuesheng (Tu Yueh-sheng; 1888-1951) were unique. A study of the vicissitudes of Du's life shows how he became the creature of the Guomindang, which used him, abandoned him, and, after his death, praised him as a great anticommunist.
