Abstract : Examines the influence and effect of Western culture on the Chinese people of Shanghai through the foreign concessions in Shanghai. The directness and reliability of message transmission, the advanced and strict municipal administration, and the flourishing commercial economy stimulated the Shanghai citizens' awareness of modernness and promoted the modernization and autonomy movement in Shanghai. Shanghai citizens' ambivalent mentality of envy and alert toward the foreign concessions reflected the Chinese people's complex psychological attitude toward national independence and modernization.
