Abstract : American films monopolized China's foreign film market in the interwar years. After the Japanese defeat in 1945, American films staged a comeback, taking advantage of various favorable conditions, and monopolized the Shanghai film market once again. However, this situation did not last very long. Following the resurgence in the domestic film industry, the Shanghai film market changed gradually. Under the economic conditions at that time the revenue sharing system entailed unprecedented difficulties and became a factor obstructing the release of American films. Consequently, from 1947 the import of American films into Shanghai declined drastically, and their share of the film market in Shanghai declined as well. This trend ran counter to America's general penetration of virtually every other aspect of Chinese life in the postwar period.
