Abstract : The collapse of Chinese Communist Party activity in Shanghai by 1934 has been blamed on the leadership of the Russian returned students who were unfairly accused of blindly following Moscow's leadership. Post-Mao history has allowed for a more balanced treatment of the group but the greater necessity to rehabilitate Liu Shaoqi has led to continued, biased evaluation of the returned students.
