Abstract : Women's strikes in St. Petersburg and Shanghai are compared according to their form, the response of the authorities, the nature of their solidarity, the types of demands, and other aspects. The extent to which the distinctiveness of the strikes was a product of female involvement is also discussed. Women were able to develop a distinct political and gender identity through the strikes.
