Abstract : An analysis of the sources of conflict in imperial Russia and in China during the early 20th century can be based on comparisons of the relations between workers and supervisors in St. Petersburg and Shanghai. While the application of these situations is limited by the specifics of each situation, some common factors can be identified. First, in each instance cultural factors in class relations impacted on worker/supervisor relations. Within this category, issues relating to class identification and gender are evident in each situation. Second, class relations were affected by discourse. Finally, in both St. Petersburg and Shanghai, many conflicts resulted from issues relating to humane treatment.
