Abstract : Describes the role of the Shanghai Concession in introducing Western learning to China in the late Qing period. This connection between the capitalist world and feudal China meant that Shanghai became a showroom of Western culture. Progressive Chinese in the late Qing era came to know Western learning through the foreign concession. After they reflected on Chinese learning and recognized the difference between the two, they began to search for the road to Chinese modernization.
