Abstract : Shanghai student groups in the early 1920's were ideologically quite varied. Once the Chinese Communist Party was formed, it won a leading position among them. at the heart of many student groups was a common "native place," and after the May 4 Movment many outsiders came to Shanghai where the Chinese Communist Party supported their activism, an activism born of resentment at Shanghai elitism and the shock of the great city. Originally united, the students soon broke into university-centered groups and further subdivided on individual campuses. While Shanghai University's program facilitated student activism, other schools made this very difficult.
