Abstract : Traces the development and analyzes the lasting influence of two institutions of higher education founded by Baptist churches from the United States in the first half of the 20th century - the University of Shanghai, which operated from 1909 to 1949, and Hong Kong Baptist College, established in 1956 and renamed Hong Kong Baptist University in 1994. Later run by Chinese Christians, both schools maintained a balance of liberal and professional education and put great emphasis on Christian ethics in teaching their students.
