Abstract : The influx of foreign capital and industries, following the Treaty of Nanjing (1842), had a tremendous impact on the survival of Chinese household industries, of which the production of cotton handicrafts is a case in point. Initially affecting districts close to the treaty port of Shanghai, the entire regional cotton handicraft trade was all but bankrupted by 1937. Other handicrafts such as straw weaving and lace- and towel-making were started to supplant cotton textile products, but none could survive under the social and economic conditions of that period.
