Abstract : A translation of an interview conducted by Qi Peinan and Shen Hongli, which appeared in Dangshi Ziliao [Historical documents on the History of the Chinese Communist Party] 1981 (4): 55-68. Sent by the Chinese Communist Party to infiltrate the Nationalist government in Nanjing, Li Jianhua was made director of Shanghai's Labor Department in 1945. He worked to ameliorate the working conditions of laborers with such success as to attract the suspicion of government leaders, so early in 1948 he became an adviser to the Shanghai municipal government and, at the same time, editor of a newspaper run by the Nationalist Huangpu Clique. Exposure of government corruption in this paper led to Liu's flight from Shanghai in the spring.
