Abstract : The commercialization and urbanization of Shanghai in the late Qing caused changes in people's lifestyle and ideas. Foreign commodities were popular, people were enthusiastic about commercial activities, the old social heirarchy was broken, women began to enter social life, and people longed for ease and pleasure. All of this resulted in the breakdown of traditional ethics and the emergence of modern market consciousness, a sense of equality, the pursuit of freedom, and satisfaction of desires.
