Abstract : Analyzes the reason and the result of the series of raids on foreigners at Shanghai Port in the summer of 1859. This incident occurred on the eve of the Peking treaty, by which the recruitment of coolies in Guangdong (Kwangtung) province would be extended to make Shanghai into a coolie trade port. This riot against the coolie trade as well as the Amoy riot in 1852 had a significant effect on Western traders' distance to the coolie trade.
