Abstract : Contemporary records and reports of the Anti-Kidnapping Women and Children's Salvation Society, a charity organization founded to investigate abduction of women and children, to care for the victims, and to return them to their families, reveal that although founded by the Shanghai business society with altruistic objectives, the society's implementation of its tasks suffered dramatically, evident in the government warnings for poor hygiene and education that the society received.
