Abstract : The Association of Shanghai Banks, a financial organization for Chinese and foreign cooperation, was sponsored by Chinese "modern banks," Chinese "native banks," and foreign banks in Shanghai during the 1920's. The rules of the association gave more benefits to foreign banks but provided advantages to Chinese banks for expanding their foreign exchange business. Studying the establishment of this association sheds light on relations between Chinese and foreign banks in modern Shanghai banking.
