Abstract : Suggests that the controversy over the social messages carried in the silent film The New Woman (1935) and the subsequent suicide of lead actress Ruan Lingyu (1910-35), imitating the fate of the film's protagonist, was due to the film's ambiguous handling of gender and class, which could best be understood through an analysis of film director Cai Chusheng's (1906-68) complex cinematic techniques.
