Abstract : Examines theaters in Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin during the early republican period and suggests that the transformation of theatrical space from teahouses, where patrons, vendors, and actors intermingled into theaters where various arenas of activity were clearly demarcated, implies a change in the nature of representation. The author shows ways in which the new Western-inspired theaters were seen as part of a modernizing and civilizing project.
