Abstract : The collapsing state of the Manchu government in 1911 led to an unlikely coalition in Shanghai of revolutionaries, businessmen, and bankers, which, after the fall of the Manchus, quickly disintegrated as factionalism and power struggles evolved. One faction of the alliance supported President Yuan Shikai, another the revolutionary groups, and a third remained neutral, hoping to preserve its own interests in any event
