Abstract : Examines installment fiction published in Shanghai at the turn of the 19th century and connects the aesthetics of the narrative to the material conditions of its production, noting that attention to time and space is essential to the narrative form. The city spaces and also the distinction between Shanghai and its hinterlands are evoked in the fiction and the ways in which it is produced and read.
