Abstract : The opening of Shanghai in 1843 as a treaty port had a decisive impact on the rural economy of nearby southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang in that it stimulated the growth of commercial crop production in these areas and drove the manufacturing sector to respond to international trade.
