Abstract : After climbing the rungs of the administrative and police ladder of the French concession in Shanghai before World War II and during the Vichy regime, Roland Sarly became a target of the political purge launched by the Chinese nationalist government in 1945. His example reflects both the difficulties of a political purge in the context of postwar Shanghai and the liquidation of the French presence in the region.
