Information data : University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: hu-s06. Liu RongTa (Six Banyan Trees Pagoda), also know as Hua Ta (Flower, or Flowery, Pagoda) was first constructed in 1047. Su Dongpo wrote a poem about the six luxuriant banyan trees, after a visit in 1100. The octagonal pagoda is nine stories on the outside, but seventeen stories inside. It is located inside the city walls at the Liu Rong Temple, Liurong Si (Temple of the Six Banyan Trees), Canton (Guangzhou). A reproduction of this image is on page 36 in 'China in Old Photographs' by Burton F. Beers (Charles Scribner, 1978): "Flowery Pagoda". Photograph by Sylvester Dutton and Michaels, Canton (Michaels' first name may have been Vince).
