Information data : The large crowd of people is made up of refugees being evacuated from Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese hostilities in 1937. Most probably, they are bound to Canton or South China. Some belong to a group of organized by the Chaozhou Native-Place Association (潮州旅滬同鄉會) as can be seen on the small pennant held by one of the refugees.
