Flood at the Cercle Sportif Français
Title : Flood at the Cercle Sportif Français
Topic : Virtual Shanghai
Location : Shanghai: French Concession
Date (start) : 1941
Estimated dates : 1941
Nature : B&W Photo
Support image : Paper
Information data : It was built in 1925. In the French Concession there were two clubs, but The "Cercle Sportif Français" was more famouse of "Cercle Français".
The word "sportif" in the title is perhaps misleading; although it did have a popular indoor swimming pool and a number of tennis courts, its focus was thoroughly social. It was also more egalitarian than its British and American counterparts. It did admit women, even if only forty at a time and with hundreds wait-listed. Alhough late, it was also the first club to admit Chinese to its membership.
Nowadays it is the Garden Hotel (Huayuan fandian).
