Caption on support : Handwritten caption: 'Hong Kong and Shanghai bank', 'Chartered Mercantile bank', 'No.2', 'This is a continuation of the Bund described at foot of (No.1) and gives a good idea of grass preserve between the street and the river, also the Pontoons [?] or Cargo jetties with the cargo boats around them. The street has evidently been watered just before the view was taken hence the dark colour.'
Information data : The Hongkong & Shanghai Bank (滙豐銀行 - Huifeng yinhang - HSBC) opened its Shanghai branch in 1865. It moved into its own building, designed by the architect William Kidner, on a site next to the Maritime Customs, in 1875. The modern building was completed in 1923.
