Comment : This text is the first direct testimony of a vist to Shanghai by Westerners, Mr. Lindsay and Charles Gutzlaff, while they traveled to various Chinese ports in an attempt to obtain their opening to foreign trade. The text presents substantilly different views as Lindsay and Gutzulaff do no tshare the same background, even if they harbor common biases and prejudices toward the Chinese, especially the officials with whol they had to deal. Yet thei text also reveals various aspects of both the city and its inhabitants upon the first contact (even if both Lindsay and Gutzlaff were familiar with Chinese society in the Canton area).
