The Jesuit priest Jacquinot worked toward and succeeded in establishing the first "Safety Zone" for civilians in Nanshi, the southern part of Shanghai, next to the French Concession. After strenuous negotiations, Father Jacquinot managed to convince the belligerants to accept the creation of the zone. Located in the northern part of the former walled city,covening about one third of its surface, the Safety Zone received about 250,000 refugees.
